A number of Iranian models, photographers, and make-up artists have been arrested in Iran for posting selfies on Instagram without any hijab. The operation against the models, who refuse to wear hijab, started in March and resulted in arrests of at least 170 people as of now.
Some Iranian online celebrities are paying a high price for posting pictures on Instagram without wearing hijab. At least 12 models have been sentenced to six years in jail for “promoting immoral and un-Islamic culture and promiscuity” by posting hijabless selfies on Instagram, according to the France 24,. The arrests are a part of “Spider II” program by the Iranian government that targets at people who are involved in the so-called ”un-Islamic activities” on social media websites.

The operations have been continuing since the March. France 24 also stated that eight women and four men have been arrested in this period. All of them are sentenced to prison terms ranging from five months to six years.
Some of the accused are models, and others are make-up artists and photographers. Most of them were active on Instagram, according to the national TV of the country. They were convicted by a special court named Shiraz. The identities of the sentenced individuals are kept secret.

The lawyer of convicts, Mahmoud Taravat, told the Iranian news agency ILSA News that they won’t be able to go outside Iran for at least another two years after serving their prison terms. They will be able to work in modeling and fashion, though.
“The government stopped seven modeling agency and imprisoned dozens of people in November,” said Iranian prosecutor Esmail Sadeghi Nyarki. He stressed that the photographers, stylists, models arrested so far was engaged in the commercial business of publishing vulgar contents online.
Famous Iranian model Elham Arab is one of the arrested people. She was sent to the court and forced to apologize publicly, according to a Telegraph report.

Meanwhile, an online campaign named “My Stealthy Freedom” got popular in Iran. They post images of Iranian women without Hijab on their Instagram page.
Instagram is very popular in Iran as most of the other popular networks are blocked in the country. The government of the country is very strict and determined in implementing their laws on wearing Hijab.
